Summary[]

Point of view: Rand al'Thor

Rand breaks free of his struggle with the Dark One and again faces Moridin, who throws a knife at Alanna.

Point of view: El'Nynaeve ti al'Meara Mandragoran

Moridin's knife strikes Alanna, but due to Nynaeve's herbs she is awake enough to release her bond to Rand before she dies. Rand raises Callandor to strike down Moridin, but Moridin stabs his own hand with a knife, causing Rand to twitch and drop Callandor.

Point of view: Perrin Aybara

Perrin fights Slayer and, for the first time since killing the Whitecloaks in the stedding years ago, fully lets go of his emotions.

Slayer shifts into the real world, thinking he's escaped but Perrin follows him. They run through Aiel and Darkhounds until Slayer sees him and shifts back into Tel'aran'rhiod.

He sees Perrin again and shifts back and forth, trying to get away. Perrin catches him and finally kills him.

He sees a group of shadowspawn with pock-marked faces, but ignores them. The Darkhounds break through the Dragonsworn defenders. He takes a group of Aiel to the mouth of the Pit of Doom as a last defence, meeting the spirits of wolves called back to the world by the Horn of Valere. He leads them against the Darkhounds.

Point of view: Matrim Cauthon

Mat meets up with Perrin as the mists of Mashadar creep toward the Pit of Doom. Perrin kills a Darkhound, which surprisingly remains dead. He warns Mat about them and asks about Faile's whereabouts. Mat isn't certain where she is now, but explains that she was last seen leading Trollocs away to protect Olver. Perrin remains hopeful that Faile is alive. Mat mentions Fain has arrived with Mashadar, and they both acknowledge their debts to settle with him.

While Mat speaks, a tendril of Mashadar's mist impales him from behind, knocking him off his horse.
