Summary[]

Point of view: Moiraine Damodred

Back in the common room, Moiraine surprisingly sees Siuan poke her head into the inn. Siuan motions Moiraine to follow her into the street. They meet in an alley and Siuan has terrible news for Moiraine - all five of Tamra's searchers have died under mysterious circumstances. Moiraine says it could have been a coincidence, even though she does not really believe it. But Siuan continues and tells her that Meilyn had returned to the tower and Siuan wanted to warn her of the other deaths. Siuan hid under Meilyn's bed to await her return, but Meilyn never came. The next morning Chesmal Emry announced that Meilyn was found dead in her bed, which Siuan knows is impossible. The Yellows could not find poison or smothering and declared it a natural death, but Siuan is convinced that Meilyn was killed by the Power.

Siuan says that Tamra must have been put to the question before being murdered, and forced to reveal the names of all the sisters she sent to search for the Dragon Reborn. It can only be the work of the Black Ajah. Siuan left a note under Sierin Vayu's door about the Black Ajah (but not mentioning the Dragon Reborn) before leaving to find Moiraine. Siuan thinks it is likely that the Black do not know about them or else Siuan would be dead by now. Moiraine says they have to proceed as if they are the only ones remaining who can carry on the search for the Dragon Reborn. She sends Siuan on towards Chachin and intends to follow after showing herself to Cadsuane at night.

Returning to the Gates of Heaven, she notices an Arafellin man leaving the inn after having spoken to an Aes Sedai. Unfortunately she cannot see the sister or the color of her shawl, and this rouses her suspicions. Maybe it is just because she was thinking about the Black Ajah and Darkfriends. Before she can go to her room, she is told by the innkeeper, Master Helvin, that she has been moved into room shared with Mistress Haesel Palan because another three Aes Sedai have arrived. Everyone is convinced that the Lady Alys will be heading to the White Tower tomorrow to enroll as a novice after being given a talking to by Cadsuane Melaidhrin. Mistress Palan and other merchants tell Moiraine about the White Tower, and everything they say is wrong. Moiraine goes up to lay in bed for hours until Cadsuane comes to check on her in the wee hours of the morning, after which she goes down to leave. She has to abandon most of her belongings to escape notice, but she can buy more clothing later with her remaining coin and letters-of-rights.
