The One Power and Its Origins[]
Channeling is the act of using the One Power, which is a fundamental force in the Wheel of Time universe. It emanates from the True Source, which consists of two complementary halves: saidin (the male half) and saidar (the female half). These halves work together and against each other, providing the driving force that turns the Wheel of Time (object) itself.
- Saidin: The male half of the True Source, tainted by the Dark One, is like water with a thin slick of rancid oil floating on top. It remains pure but cannot be touched without encountering foulness.
- Saidar: The female half remains untainted and safe to be used.
Who Can Channel?[]
Not everyone has the ability to channel the One Power. Most people have no capacity for it, while some can be taught to varying degrees. However, a few individuals are born with "the spark," an innate inclination that leads them to touch the Source involuntarily. These untrained channelers, often referred to as wilders, may die without gaining control over their abilities due to a mysterious sickness. Wilders sometimes unknowingly use the One Power to influence events when they want something badly enough.
Aes Sedai and Other Channelers[]
- Aes Sedai: An all-female organization, the Aes Sedai are skilled channelers who serve as advisors, diplomats, and protectors. They follow strict rules and hierarchies.
- Windfinders: Female channelers among the Atha'an Miere who manipulate weather and currents.
- Wise Ones: Female channelers among the Aiel, who focus on survival and combat skills. Not all Wise Ones can channel.
- Damane: Female channelers enslaved by the Seanchan.
- Asha'man: Male channelers trained by Rand al'Thor.
Cleansing of Saidin[]
- Cleansing of saidin: A pivotal event where Rand al'Thor and Nynaeve al'Meara purged the Dark One's taint from saidin, making it safe for male channelers once again.
