Darmovan was a large kingdom that existed during the Free Years. It was established after the end of the Trolloc Wars, rising out of the former territory of Safer. It later formed part of the empire of Artur Hawkwing. Darmovan is known to history as the place where the false Dragon Guaire Amalasan begin his campaign to conquer the Westlands, although it is unclear if Darmovan was his homeland. Its territory was later inherited by the kingdom of Almoth and parts of it are today held by Arad Doman and Tarabon, although the majority is wilderness.

Geography[]

Darmovan

Darmovan was one of the larger kingdoms of the Free Years era, dominating the west coast of the continent. Its borders were the Aryth Ocean in the west, the River Dhagon and River Akuum in the north, the Mountains of Mist in the east, and a line extending from the bay south of Toman Head southeast into the Mountains of Mist in the south, cutting across the headwaters of the River Andahar. Darmovan's neighbors were Abayan and Oman Dashar to the north; Farashelle to the east, beyond the Mountains of Mist; Dhowlan to the southeast, also beyond the mountains; and Elan Dapor to the south. All of Toman Head and Almoth Plain was contained within the territory of Darmovan, as was Lake Somal and Paedish Swar, the Darkwood.

The name and location of Darmovan's capital are not recorded, although the modern cities of Falme and Katar were located within its territory and Bandar Eban was on its border with Abayan. It is unknown if they were also major cities at this time or what role they played.

History[]

As with much of the Free Years, Darmovan's history is not known in detail. It is known that Darmovan was one of the last nations to suffer from the Black Fever, a plague that ravaged the continent culminating in FY 939, and it was apparently not too badly affected, as Guaire Amalasan was able to take control of the nation and forge an army large enough to invade and conquer Elan Dapor and Balasun further south within a year.

After Amalasan's death, Darmovan became leaderless and like most of the false Dragon's former territory, fell into chaos and internecine conflict. During the Wars of the Consolidation it fell under the control of Artur Hawkwing and became a province of his empire, although it is unknown if it kept the same name. During and after the War of the Hundred Years the kingdom of Almoth arose from the territory formerly held by Darmovan.

Darmovan's borders and the role it played in Amalasan's ascension are given in The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time.
