Dhowlan was a kingdom of the Free Years. It was founded after the Trolloc Wars, rising out of the southernmost remnants of Manetheren, and was later conquered by the false Dragon Guaire Amalasan and then Artur Hawkwing. The modern kingdom of Ghealdan almost exactly matches the borders of Dhowlan.

Geography[]

Dhowlan

In red location within the Westlands

Dhowlan possessed almost identical borders to the kingdom that replaced it, Ghealdan. It stretched from the River Manetherendrelle in the north to the River Eldar in the south, with the Mountains of Mist to the west, and Garen's Wall to the north and east. Dhowlan's neighbors were Farashelle to the north, Shiota to the east, Kharendor to the south, and Elan Dapor and Darmovan to the west, over the mountains. The capital city is presumed to have been Jehannah, as it was for Ghealdan later on.

History[]

Dhowlan appears to have been a small, quietly prosperous nation troubled only by intermittent warfare with Farashelle to the north, possibly as part of an attempt to restore Manetheren. A great general, Garen, protected Dhowlan several times from invasion by using the immense ridge line to the north as a defensive fortification, and developing tactics and additional fortifications to stop it being outflanked. The ridge is named for him.

Dhowlan was conquered by Guaire Amalasan during the War of the Second Dragon, and fell into discontent and lawlessness for a time after his death. Artur Hawkwing annexed the kingdom during the Consolidation and added it to his empire as a province. During the War of the Hundred Years the nation was gripped by fighting, mostly in attempts to restore Dhowlan. After the longest attempt at this failed, in FY 1109 four strong Houses jointly seized the throne and mediated a peace treaty between the remaining contenders, forming the Crown High Council. To sever the ties to the past, the nation was renamed Ghealdan, making it one of the last of the modern kingdoms to be founded.
