Setting: Fal Dara, Shienar, Medo |
Summary[]
- Point of view: Egwene al'Vere
Fal Dara keep is in turmoil after an attempt on the life of the Amyrlin Seat, Siuan Sanche. Lord Agelmar Jagad entreats the Amyrlin to wait until he has found the bowman before leaving, but she can wait no further. Amid much fanfare, the Aes Sedai leave Fal Dara, accompanied by Shienarian soldiers. They head west towards the River Mora which is a tributary of the Erinin.
The Amyrlin sets a grueling march and the party rides for as long as possible before pitching camp shortly before dusk. Lan comes over one night and speaks with Nynaeve. Nynaeve comes back sobbing but will not discuss it.
Egwene and Nynaeve are also visited in their tent by a different Aes Sedai each night. Most give them lessons in channeling the One Power. Verin Mathwin comes first and explains that Egwene is unusual in her eagerness to learn the One Power; Moiraine also had the same eagerness. She walks the two through novice exercises to improve their ability to grasp saidar. Nynaeve refuses to participate until Verin tells her that she could become an Accepted with only a little training. Life is much more pleasant as an Accepted; novices must do chores and are expected to obey without question. Accepted are allowed to ask questions and choose their own studies. The exercises focus on serenity and surrendering to the Power. They are helpful for Egwene and she slowly improves. Nynaeve, however, only gets progressively more angry until she lashes out and accidentally lights the blankets on fire, which Verin extinguishes. That puts an end to the lesson.
Alviarin, Alanna, and Liandrin all come on subsequent nights. Alviarin is strict in her lesson but also patient. Alanna asks them many questions about Rand, Mat, and Perrin, which makes Egwene uncomfortable. Liandrin barely teaches at all and focuses on asking about the three boys until Nynaeve tells her to leave. Egwene wishes Moiraine was the one teaching them, but Moiraine spends all her time speaking to the other Aes Sedai and ignores them.
After a while, Egwene begins to have dreams about Rand being in danger, and feels that there might be more to them than just regular nightmares.
- a man with a mask over his face, and fire in place of his eyes who was surprised to see her[1]
- a woman looking down at Rand sleeping in his cloak and Egwene knew she was evil[2]
- a feeling of danger as if a trap was just beginning to snap shut
When they arrive at the village of Medo, she looks for Moiraine to tell her about the dreams. Asking Anaiya, she learns that Moiraine left with Lan days ago and Liandrin and Verin both disappeared on subsequent nights. The Amyrlin is enraged that the three left without saying anything. Anaiya's motherly face makes Egwene feel safe and she tells her about the dreams. Anaiya considers the possibility that Egwene is a Dreamer and promises to give her the proper training if so. Anaiya directs her to quickly join Nynaeve and the Amyrlin on the River Queen, bound for Tar Valon.
