Hend the Striker is a Hero of the Horn.
Appearance and Personality[]
He is a large, dark-skinned man. He carries a hammer in one hand and a spike in the other. He rides a big bay horse and laughs a lot, even in battle.[1]
Activities[]
He is one of the Heroes of the Horn who are called back to fight in the Last Battle.[1] He is also the one to explain to Mat Cauthon that he is not a Hero of the Horn.[2]

Hend is based on the popular American folk hero of African descent John Henry who drove railroad spikes with a hammer.[3] According to legend, John Henry's prowess as a steel driver was measured in a race against a steam-powered rock drill, a race that he won only to die in victory with a hammer in hand as his heart gave out from stress. Inkeeping with Jordan's theme of events turning to legend, the true facts of John Henry's life are disputed.
