Joiya Byir was a Aes Sedai of the Gray Ajah.[1] She was also Black Ajah and a member of Liandrin's Group of Black Sisters

Appearance and Personality[]

Joiya appeared to be a handsome woman, with a friendly, motherly face, dark gray eyes and dark hair.

Strength and Abilities[]

Joiya is weak in the One Power for an Aes Sedai, with a strength level of 28(16). She was the weakest among Liandrin's group of Black Sisters.

History[]

Joiya was 171 years old when she died. She was born in 828 NE and went to the White Tower in 844 NE. After spending nine years as a novice and eleven years as Accepted, she was raised to the shawl in 864 NE.

Activities[]

She was found by Egwene al'Vere in Tel'aran'rhiod while she was dreaming. Egwene cut her from the True Source and bound her in Air, leaving her in the world of dreams.[2]

She was held prisoner in the Stone of Tear and questioned by Egwene, Nynaeve al'Meara and Elayne Trakand on the whereabouts of the Black Ajah now. She told them they plan to use Mazrim Taim as a False Dragon and unleash destruction on all the nations but to call himself Rand al'Thor.[1] Because she was still bound by her oaths to the Shadow, she could not tell the truth about this.

Murder[]

She was murdered during the Trolloc attack on the Stone, along with Amico Nagoyin, by Slayer, who cut their throats after nailing their tongues to the cell door.[3][4][5]

In the television series[]

In the television series, Joiya Byir TVlink is played by actress Joelle TVlink.

Errata[]

In early printings of the The Dragon Reborn, Joiya is stated to be White Ajah and the eldest of the Black sisters that fled the Tower and old enough to be Egwene's grandmother. These are both incorrect as it is stated that two of each Ajah except for the Red Ajah fled the Tower. Since Rianna Andomeran and Falion Bhoda are both White Ajah and there is only one Gray sister, Temaile Kinderode, this was corrected in later printings. Her age was also corrected to be "old enough to be her grandmother's grandmother". The Kramer/Reading audiobook also contains these errors.
