Setting: Sun Palace, Cairhien (city)

Summary

Point of view: Rand al'Thor

Rand is resting in his room in the Sun Palace. He finds the flute Thom Merrilin gave him and tries to play for Min, but he is out of practice. His knees almost gave out after holding saidin away from Lews Therin for so long when he was in Caemlyn. The Wise Ones descend upon him but finally decide he just needs rest. Min continues to flirt with him.

Rand visits the school in Cairhien where he sees more of the inventions that are being produced. He also visits Herid Fel, who is very distracted by Min. The next day he sends Rand a note:

"Belief and order give strength. Have to clear rubble before you can build."

Rand starts meeting with the nobles with Min secretly watching for auras. Lord Maringil is going to die by poison, Lady Colavaere by hanging, Lord Meilan by the knife. Lords Aracome, Maraconn, and Gueyam will be killed in battle. Min accidentally gets interested in philosophy and begins reading extensively the books she can find. Min sees an aura around Berelain that she will fall head-over-heals for a man in white. Min also begins practicing her knife throwing and hand-to-hand combat with the Maidens.

Point of view: Perrin Aybara

Berelain is stalking Perrin and Faile is jealous over it despite all Perrin's efforts to put Berelain off and assure Faile he is not interested. He tries going hunting, but Berelain is always waiting for him when he gets back to the city. He tries telling her to stop and she pretends not to know what he's talking about. Lords and Lady begin trying to get in his confidence, to find out Rand's plans.

Point of view: Rand al'Thor

After ten days in Cairhien Rand estimates it will be ten more before Merana arrives. He will meet with Coiren twice in that time so that each embassy will have had three meetings. Then he expects the Salidar group will see reason before long and agree to support him openly.
