Melfane Dawlish is an Andoran midwife. Her aunt is Essande.
Appearance[]
Melfane Dawlish is a short and stout woman with dark eyes and a round face.[1][2] She is generally a happy woman who has a ready laugh, but is very tyrannical to those who do not follow her orders.[1]
Activities[]
When Monaelle leaves Caemlyn, Essande suggests that Melfane take over as Elayne Trakand's midwife.[3] One of her first acts as her midwife is to stop the near starvation diet being imposed on Elayne by all the women around her, and have her begin eating for two. She also prescribes regular exposure to sunlight. As Elayne's pregnancy progresses, Melfane examines her and warns her not to tax herself.[2][4][5] Melfane is summoned by Mat and Birgitte when Elane was stabbed during her subterfuge with the captured Black Ajah members.[6] Following the stabbing, Melfane orders that Elayne be put on bed rest for a week.[7] Not wanting to disobey her midwife's direction, Elayne has her bed carried to a city wall to see the dragons demonstration.[8] After months of assurances that she was carrying twins, Elayne is elated when Melfane confirms that there are two babes.[9]
