Setting: White Tower, Kinslayer's Dagger |
Summary[]
- Point of view: Moiraine Damodred
Moiraine and Siuan enter the Blue Ajah quarters where all the sisters are waiting. Anaiya greets them first. Kairen is next, followed by thirty-nine others. Anaiya accompanies Cabriana to drop the newly raised Aes Sedai to their rooms, and confirms that Eadyth is the First Selector. The rooms are lavish: they each have a bedroom, dressing room, sitting room, and study. Everything is too frilly for Moiraine's liking, but Siuan likes it. Moiraine wears her kesiera for the first time in six years. They head back to Eadyth's quarters, where she tells them speaking of strength in the One Power is the second greatest rudeness, speaking of age being the first. Nevertheless, Aes Sedai are to always judge another's strength and defer respectively. Failure to defer is the third greatest rudeness. On the way back to their rooms, Cetalia interrupts them. She gives Siuan a puzzle to solve. When she does, the older Aes Sedai hustles Siuan off to her own rooms. Anaiya returns and offers Moiraine Healing to ease the tightness of the Oaths, although in reality it is to heal her last punishment as Accepted for the attempted mice prank on Elaida. She also brings a summons to see Tamra.
- Point of view: Siuan Sanche
After hours of testing, Cetalia conscripts Siuan to be her assistant as eyes and ears for the Blue Ajah. Siuan is dismayed, but sadly has no choice. As Siuan leaves and finds Moiraine sitting disconsolately, she finds out that Tamra put Moiraine in charge of dispursing the bounty. Now neither of them will be able to leave the White Tower to search for the Dragon Reborn. Siuan tells a little bit too much to Moiraine, who immediately figures out she is helping head the eyes-and-ears of the Blue. Siuan tells Moiraine that dispursing the bounty would only take a few months and she would be able to leave the Tower afterwards, but Moiraine tells Siuan that the Hall may have made her Queen of Cairhien by then. Siuan thinks Moiraine would make a great queen, but Moiraine tells her of the difficulty of being the monarch of Cairhien. The monarchy is under constant threat and must resort to unscrupulous tactics to maintain the throne. She does not want to be like her ruthless grandmother, Carewin Damodred. Siuan tells her friend not to despair over her perceived lack of agency. Moiraine offers Healing and Siuan kisses her with glee.
- Point of view: Lan Mandragoran
Lan and his men scout the Aiel as they cross Kinslayer's Dagger heading to the Spine of the World. Some of the men want to attack the retreating Aiel rather than just watch them, but Bukama knows they would have no chance against the Aiel fighting in mountains. Bukama is concerned that Pedron Niall may issue such a foolish order to attack, but Lan knows Niall is no fool. Lan itches to return to the Blight to resume his war with the Shadow, but Bukama convinces him to wait at least another four months. As the Aiel withdraw into the Waste, Lan and Bukama leave the other soldiers and head south, away from Tar Valon. Lan has no desire to be entangled with Aes Sedai.
