Summary[]
- Point of view: Moiraine Damodred
Moiraine and Siuan go down to the main dining hall for dinner, proudly displaying their newly acquired shawls. After dinner they are summoned back to Eadyth who gives them each a letter-of-rights for one thousand gold crowns. They will receive that much every year and more if needed, although Eadyth cautions them against requesting additional money too frequently. Siuan will only trust the White Tower bank with her money, but Moiraine goes to her own banker, Ilain Dormaile. Moiraine and her father have banked with the Dormaile family for many years.
Dormaile tells Moiraine that she had already sent Moiraine a letter, but Moiraine is surprised and knows nothing about it. Moiraine shows nothing on her face however and soon learns from Dormaile that a mysterious Cairhienin man who called himself Ries Gorthanes, posing as a Tower guard, tried to obtain her banking records using a forged order purportedly from the Amyrlin Seat. Mistress Dormaile saw through the ruse and had the man detained, but one of the bank's employees was bribed to release him before the real Tower guards could arrive. Moiraine realizes that the Hall must still be trying to put her on the Sun Throne given that she was not told about the letter. At least she is glad that she decided to retain her personal banker rather than use the Tower bank, who would have told her nothing. Moiraine starts laying plans to escape her quandry and leaves Dormaile with some instructions and gives payment for the latter's discretion.
The next day Moiraine takes Siuan with her to buy some dresses at Tamore Alkohima's shop, a dressmaker favored by several Blue sisters. While Moiraine orders twenty silk dresses, Siuan is not used to spending that much money and only orders six wool dresses. Moiraine tries to impress on Siuan that good clothing brings respect which can bring power. In addition to the twenty dresses for wearing in the Tower, Moiraine also orders five additional riding dresses in the Cairhienin style with house colors as part of her plans. She tells Tamore that these latter dresses are not to be delivered to the Tower.
