Summary[]

Point of view: Lan Mandragoran

It is early spring as Lan and Bukama arrive in Canluum, a city in Kandor. There are rumors running through the town of a man who can channel. The duo's hadori mark them as Malkieri and draw attention from others. Lan can only think about the Blight, where he is headed. They have traveled through Cairhien, Andor, and Tear since the end of the Aiel War. The ruler of Canluum is Lord Varan Marcasiev; his banner is the Red Stag. They lead their horses into Canluum where the gate guards do not recognize Lan, which annoys Bukama. Lan is owed respect as heir of Malkier. Some who enter with hoods up are prompted to lower them, as under the law all must bare their face inside Borderland villages and cities to show that they are not one of the Eyeless.

Inside the city, Lan is accosted by a young guard who recognizes him and expresses relief that Lan had not died fighting the Aiel as rumors said. The guard offers Lan a ceremonial Malkieri greeting, which offends Bukama because the boy does not dress according to Malkieri customs and is sworn to a Kandori lord. Bukama gets rough with the young man which prompts an officer, Alin Seroku, to come over to keep the peace. Surprisingly, Bukama apologizes and pledges not to draw his sword while within Canluum. They leave and head towards Marcasiev's palace on the highest hill in the city.

Lan sees several Aes Sedai with their ageless faces and muses that they are much more commonly seen now after the passing of the old Amyrlin Seat, Tamra Ospenya. He stays away from them lest one try to claim him as a Warder. Just as the Malkieri reputation for ferocity caused the villagers to be leery of them, it could be attractive to a sister searching for a Warder. Supposedly the Aes Sedai asked before bonding a man, but he knew several who were surprised to find themselves bonded so. They see a few other Malkieri present, but the men are not wearing the hadori and the women do not have the ki'sain. Afraid Bukama will start more trouble, Lan makes excuses to avoid the palace and instead goes to find an inn to stay. To his surprise, Bukama does not complain about missing palace accommodations or food. Lan is worried that Bukama has lost his hard edge that they will need to survive in the Blight.
