Summary[]
- Point of view: Moiraine Damodred
Upon Brys's, Diryk's and Iselle's death, the whole Chachin is set into mourning. Moiraine sees Edeyn haggard and withdrawn when passing her in the hallway. Moiraine returns to her apartments where Siuan tells her that Rahien was born in a farmhouse and is therefore not the Dragon Reborn. Moiraine tells Siuan all about the confrontation with Merean. Merean seemed to want to kill Diryk first, and she wanted to kill Lan as well. She asks Siuan about this apparent puzzle but Siuan growled, not seeing sense in it. But Moiraine explains that both were lucky, both cheating death unintentionally. Then Moiraine starts mentioning other lucky men who might be part of the pattern Merean was following.
Then Siuan becomes eager, seeing the solution after a little pondering. The Black Ajah must know that the Dragon was reborn, but not the time of his birth. With horror, she says that the Blacks are killing off every man who might be able to channel. Men who could channel wouldn't know what they were doing at first, referring to it as luck most of the time. Then they often suddenly become popular.
There is nothing they can do except continue, so Siuan suggests that they move on quickly to Arafel. They have a small advantage knowing that the Dragon is still a baby. But Moiraine tells Siuan to return to the White Tower, where she would be Cetalia's right hand in the Blue Ajah's complex system of eyes-and-ears, so she can find both the Black Ajah and the Dragon. Siuan does not look forward to whatever penance Cetalia might set for abandoning her post, but agrees. Siuan mentions to Moiraine that Lan was seen riding out towards the Blight. Moiraine rushes outside to find Lan, since she already made up her mind about him if he wasn't a Darkfriend, which she proved he wasn't.
Moiraine finds Lan sitting in despair on a hill, with the death of his last friend and the second revealed to be a Darkfriend. Moiraine asks him to be her Warder, but Lan says he can only carry on his war with the Shadow. But Moiraine is part of that same war and tells him everything — things she would tell only to either Siuan or her already bonded Warder — starting from Gitara Moroso's prophecy to what she and Siuan had pieced together about the Black sisters.
Lan draws his sword after a time, making a sacred oath that he will follow Moiraine as she leads. Moiraine finishes by weaving Spirit, bonding him to her. They ride back to Chachin to say goodbye to Siuan, then to Arafel after that, and then the world — all to find this Dragon.
