A Sailmistress is the captain of a Sea Folk ship and invariably a female. She is assisted by, and often married to her Cargomaster, who is always male.
The Sailmistress controls when and where the ship sails, her word unquestioned. As well as being the head of the ship, she is also regarded as the head of the crew's families, whether or not there is any actual kinship.
