A Wheel of Time Wiki
"And lest you start thinking it's some sort of reward, remember that the first few weeks as one of the Accepted are used to pick the rotting fish out of the basket of good ones. Your worst day as a novice will seem a fond dream compared to the least of your studies over the next weeks."

Summary[]

Point of view: Egwene al'Vere

Egwene lays on her bed, worrying over what will happen to her. She talks to Elayne through the hole in the wall. Elayne had not expected this reception. Egwene agrees, as she had thought they might be heroes for discovering the Black Ajah and that Liandrin is one of them. They also returned with the Horn of Valere. But Verin had said that they cannot speak of Liandrin or the Horn to anyone but the Amyrlin. Both Verin and Faolain had mentioned Stilling as a possible punishment; the two agree that they would fight or run away before they let that happen. Their doors slam open and Accepted come to take them to the Amyrlin.

Egwene and Elyane meet up with Nynaeve who is also on her way to see the Amyrlin. Faolain tries to criticize Egwene in front of Leane in the antechamber but only earns herself a punishment. Leane escorts them in to see the Amyrlin who makes them wait before eventually addressing them. Siuan calls them runaways but Nynaeve immediately disagrees and says that they were only following Liandrin's orders to go with her. Siuan says not to speak her name here. Elayne says Liandrin is Black Ajah but Siuan already knows. Liandrin and twelve others stole several ter'angreal from the Tower and tried to steal angreal and sa'angreal. They also killed twenty-one people including three Aes Sedai to hide their theft and escape. Even though they were tricked into leaving without permission, they are to be sent to Sheriam for a sound switching and they will work in the kitchens until further notice. The punishments are to be announced publicly which is also part of the punishment.

However, Egwene and Elayne will be raised to Accepted because their abilities have greatly increased. Elayne's mother visited the Tower and was furious to learn that Elayne had disappeared. She refused to take Elaida, normally her advisor, back with her to Caemlyn and demanded that Elayne be returned as soon as possible. Elayne's brothers talked themselves into staying when Morgase wanted to leave with them. Morgase left a letter with Sheriam for Elayne; Elayne replies that she wishes to stay and become Aes Sedai. Siuan agrees and is determined to see her raised to the shawl. Siuan has Leane take Elayne to the kitchens so she can talk to Egwene and Nynaeve in private.
