— Elayne to Egwene and Nynaeve
<<< Questions >>> |
Setting: White Tower |
Summary[]
- Point of view: Egwene al'Vere
Egwene, Nynaeve and Elayne are conducting their investigation into the Black Ajah in Nynaeve's room. Elayne is reading the notes they received from Verin while Nynaeve paces in the room. Egwene had a restless night sleeping with many dreams and nightmares. She is reluctant to speak to Anaiya about them now because she feels any Aes Sedai could be Black Ajah. She did learn from Anaiya months before that a Dreamer's dreams about ta'veren are basically always significant. She is trying to sort out if some of the dreams have meaning.

Nynaeve is frustrated that there is nothing useful in Verin's notes. Nynaeve tells Elayne to stop wasting her time, but Elayne just points out that they are all Accepted now and Nynaeve cannot order her. Elayne says they have no pattern in their birthdays, names, Ajahs or nationalities. The sisters are evenly distributed with two in each Ajah and Liandrin as the only Red. This means there is a pattern in no pattern and that there must be more Black Ajah still in the tower. There must be an extended number of Black Ajah in order for them to be able to choose such an even distribution. Nynaeve agrees and compliments Elayne on her deduction.
They also have the list of the stolen ter'angreal. Many have to do with dreaming and were last studied by Corianin Nedeal.
- a clear crystal rod, one foot long and one inch in diameter, use unknown.
- an alabaster figurine of an unclothed woman one hand tall, use unknown.
- an iron disc three inches in diameter with spirals engraved on both sides, use unknown.
- a wooden carving of a hedgehog the size of a man's thumb that makes one go to sleep.
- a fluted black rod of stone a pace long that produces balefire.
- a carved cluster of six spotted dice that warps chance.
They continue to wonder if the Aes Sedai they are in contact with might be Black Ajah. Naturally, they think it is unlikely that the Aes Sedai they like are Darkfriends. They discuss the probability that Verin genuinely missed the obvious pattern that so many of the ter'angreal were last studied by Corianin. They agree that Alanna's behavior at the end of Egwene's testing was truly peculiar. They decide they will detail their suspicions to the Amyrlin but will let her draw the conclusions. Nynaeve wants to use the twisted stone ring that night but Egwene takes the ring, saying that she is the Dreamer and will be the one to use it.
Else Grinwell[12] comes into their room without knocking and probably heard some of the things they were discussing. She seemed to be looking at the dream ter'angreal. She has a message from the Amyrlin that the belongings of Liandrin and her companions are in a storeroom. They are startled by Else's apparent knowledge of their task and decide it is necessary to talk to her about it. Egwene runs after Else and sees flashes of her white dress as she follows. But then she runs into a beautiful woman in silver and white[13] who she assumes is an Aes Sedai she does not recognize. This woman apparently knows about the murders in the Tower too. Egwene asks whether she has seen Else and the woman notes Else ran away quite quickly and is unlikely to be found now. She then tells Egwene to leave her be and Egwene starts going back to her room before she realizes what is happening. When she stops herself and turns back, the hallway is empty. She checks several more hallways but Else and the woman are nowhere to be found.
