Summary[]
- Point of view: Perrin Aybara
Perrin is riding on the Lugard Road and sees bits of pavement. He sees a bit of a dog's footprint on one of the stones but nothing on the dirt.[1] Along with Loial, Moiraine and Lan they are pushing hard trying to catch up to Rand. Loial doesn't even have time to read as they are riding anymore. They are approaching Remen on the Manetherendrelle. He thinks of his dreams, like the one with Hopper and Egwene. He intentionally makes himself sleep in bad positions so that he does not sleep deeply, to minimize dreams.
Perrin recalls the various villages and towns they traveled through, seeing different events that happened in Rand’s wake. The town Sidon burned completely to the ground when an uncontrollable fire started due to a dropped lantern in a barn. Past Sidon there were four towns unscathed but then they found Rand's horse dead by the side of the road, apparently torn apart by wolves or wild dogs.[2] The village of Willar afterwards was celebrating the rejuvenation of the spring on the village common. The village had been on the verge of abandonment due to lack of water. Past three more untouched villages, in Samaha, all the wells in the town had suddenly gone dry; in Tallan, everyone erupted into arguments and three murders were committed before the people calmed down. Finally they passed Fyall where there had been an exceptionally poor harvest but the Mayor found a buried sack of gold coins minted by Manetheren, saving them from starvation. Perrin is disturbed by the bad things happening in Rand's wake, because Rand cannot be evil. So perhaps the Pattern can sometimes be evil? Moiraine says that the Creator is good and the Dark One is evil, but the Pattern itself is neither good nor evil.
They enter Remen and Perrin smells something vile, not a Twisted One or Neverborn though. Then he berates himself for using the wolf terms for Trolloc and Myrddraal. But he can't figure out what it was he smelled.[3] In the town square an Aielman is hanging in a cage while children throw stones at him. They enter Wayland's Forge, the inn where they will stay. Gainor Furlan is the innkeeper and talks about recent events in town. There are hunters for the Horn of Valere and they are the ones who captured the Aielman. Perrin remembers that Min said an Aielman in a cage will be a turning point in his life.[4]
Perrin asks about the Aielman and Furlan says that Lord Orban and Lord Gann with ten of their retainers fought twenty Aielmen, taking one prisoner. Orban comes over, rudely asking for Mother Leich to tend to Gann's wounds. Lan questions Orban on what happened and Orban confirms that twelve of them fought twenty Aiel, losing six of their men. Orban claims to have killed all the Aiel save the one prisoner and the ones who ran. Orban mentions that Whitecloaks are out searching for the Aiel who fled, which alarms Perrin since the Whitecloaks may be looking for him. Perrin feels a set of eyes on him and looks around. He notices a young woman, about his age, with shoulder-length black hair and a nose that is almost too large. She turns away just as he looks at her.
