Summary[]
- Point of view: Perrin Aybara
Perrin wonders if the girl that was looking at him knows what yellow eyes mean. He can't figure out why she would be staring at him so. Gainor Furlan shows Perrin, Loial, Moiraine, and Lan to their rooms. On the way he says someone is proclaiming the Dragon in Ghealdan. From what he says, Lan and Perrin deduce that it is Masema. Moiraine declares that it will not be a good time for Masema when she sees him next and angrily slams closed the door to her room. The inn even has an Ogier bed for Loial to use and it is made of sung wood.
Perrin sits for a long time pondering the puzzle of the girl and comes to no conclusions other than regretting not stopping the children from throwing stones at the Aiel. So he goes to see Moiraine to see if she can help. He knocks once and then enters. He is embarrassed to find her undressed, having just stepped out of the bath. She covers up with a robe and Perrin asks if Rand caused the events with the Hunters and the Aiel. She does not think so, but Lan is still out investigating. Lan is trying to find out whether Rand crossed the river to continue to Tear overland or took a ship to Illian before continuing to Tear; they themselves must take one of those two paths. Perrin can't believe that Rand is still maintaining his pace ahead of them without a horse, but Moiraine says that Rand is descended from great runners and walkers, i.e. the Aiel. Perrin asks about the girl and suggests that perhaps she is interested in him because she is a Darkfriend, but Moiraine just chuckles and says that she might just be attracted to him.
Perrin decides to go outside and feels like someone is watching him. Perrin decides to lower the cage holding the Aiel and let him out. The Aiel, Gaul, tells Perrin that he is looking for He Who Comes With the Dawn. Perrin knows Gaul is talking about Rand and says that he is on his way to Tear. Gaul realizes the truth of Perrin's words, saying that when the Stone of Tear falls, the Aiel will leave the Three-fold Land. A dozen or so Children of the Light see that the Aiel is out, and Gaul runs at them, veiled. Perrin joins the "dance," and together they kill or disable all of them. Perrin regrets the savagery of the axe. Gaul explains that there was only one other Aiel with him, not twenty total as Lord Orban had claimed. Gaul wishes Perrin well and leaves for Tear. As Perrin starts to head back to the inn, he sees the girl again that had been staring at him. She runs away before he can talk to her. Lan comes up and asks if the dead Whitecloaks are his work and if anyone saw him. Lan tells Perrin to get the Ogier and the horses and to meet at the docks.
