Elayne comes over and feels pained over the devastation wrought by the Cairhienin civil war. Elayne speaks of recent history between Andor and Cairhien; after the Aiel War, the wars between Andor and Cairhien stopped and Andor exported much grain to Cairhien. Egwene says they can't worry about Cairhien's people, they can't do anything about it and have to figure out how to get into the Stone of Tear. Egwene suddenly realizes that one of her dreams means that a Gray Man is after Mat.
The ship suddenly stops, throwing them to the deck. Nynaeve comes up from below and surveys the status of the ship. Nynaeve says they hit a sunken ship and are stuck. The captain says a different ship should be there soon to help get them moving but it might take longer. Nynaeve says that they can just walk to Jurene, the next village on the river, and get on a different ship there. Chin Ellisor tries to talk them out of walking on the Cairhien side, but it is much shorter to the next town there. Egwene and Nynaeve start bickering as they disembark because Nynaeve is used to issuing orders as the Village Wisdom but Egwene will stand it no longer now that they are both Accepted. Elayne tries to play peacemaker with no success. They are walking along the riverside when a figure in brown and gray steps out from the bushes in front of them.
