Setting: Wolf Dream

Summary[]

Point of view: Perrin Aybara

Perrin is dreaming[1] that he is in an inn. An injured man,[2] wearing velvet with white lace at the collar, encourages him to give up the axe and go back to being a blacksmith. Perrin replies that he will, but not yet, because he is ta'veren. The man tries to get him to drink something. A murmur keeps appearing in the back of Perrin's mind but he refuses it. In refusing it, he also refuses the drink. The man tells Perrin that his fate is tied with the other two ta'veren; should one fail, all three will.

Then he finds himself standing in front of a mirror. He is wearing armor and a golden helmet shaped like a lion's head. The axe is by his side, now. He feels like he's carried it in hundreds of battles. The most beautiful woman he has ever seen[3] is standing in the room with him, talking about glory. He is affected by her tales of glory and is about to agree with her when the murmuring comes again. He refuses the murmurs and in doing so also refuses the glory.[4] She offers him a drink too but he again refuses. She leaves, but not before saying that she will be in his dreams.

Then Perrin finds himself standing on a bridge leading to endless pathways in many directions. There are many bridges, ramps and stairs in every direction in all three dimensions. Far away he sees a woman[5] hurrying somewhere. Below him on a different bridge, two men are arguing. One is tall and slender with silver in his black hair.[6] The other is not as tall and has short, white hair.[7] The two men converse but not amiably. A third man[8] joins them and the first two men seem to ally against him. Finally all three start shouting at each other and the meeting breaks up in a ball of fire. A wolf appears and Perrin shouts, "No!"

Perrin shifts to a place he seems to recognize.[9] He sees a crystal sword hanging in the air, and he cannot grab it. A whisper seems to give its name, Callandor. Then there is another whisper, "the twisted ones come" which comes from a wolf.

  • What is the significance of the axe in Perrin's past lives?
  • What is the significance of the lion-shaped golden helmet in Perrin's past lives?
