Setting: Illian |
Summary[]
- Point of view: Perrin Aybara
As the ship arrives in Illian, Perrin is watching everywhere but what is happening on the ship. He is trying to avoid thinking about his companions. Zarine and Moiraine are looking out on the city trying hard not to look at each other. Moiraine was annoyed that Perrin did not tell her that Zarine recognized her as Aes Sedai, but became truly angry when she learned that Zarine thought following them would lead to the Horn of Valere. Perrin did not think Zarine needed to tell Moiraine these things. Perrin argued with Zarine and one of them let slip that Moiraine is Aes Sedai, so now everyone on the ship knows which annoys Moiraine further. Lan watches the two and tries not to let Moiraine see him laugh. He justifies his amusement to Moiraine as something he will need if he is sent to Myrelle. Loial mostly makes himself scarce to avoid the frosty attitude between the women. Perrin cannot hear the wolves and doesn't want to hear them either. He had a couple of dreams where Hopper appears to chase him away, telling him it is too dangerous for him.
They disembark at the dock along with the horses, with the captain bowing deferentially to Moiraine. Zarine tickles the back of Perrin’s neck, and combined with the familiar smell of her, Perrin finds himself thrown off balance again. Moiraine tells Zarine that it would be best for her to leave now but Zarine declines, and says that Moiraine will not stop her from following. Moiraine says Zarine can come along if she swears on her Hunter's Oath that she will follow Moiraine's orders and not leave the party once she learns inside information about them and their mission. Zarine must also not ask any questions. Lan is surprised that Moiraine is offering Zarine the chance to stay. Zarine swears and the two women enter a solemn agreement. Moiraine assigns Perrin as Zarine's guide and watchdog and lets slip that Perrin is ta'veren. Moiraine comments that she did her best to dissuade Zarine but it seems Zarine will be Perrin's falcon after all, as Min had said. Zarine immediately questions Perrin about the falcon comment and Min, which Perrin refuses to answer. He picks up Zarine and puts her on his horse. He tries to get her to address him by name but she refuses because he refuses to call her Faile. Perrin is disgruntled that Min told Moiraine about his viewing.
