Setting: Tear, Tel'aran'rhiod |
Summary[]
- Point of view: Perrin Aybara
Perrin spends another day working in the smithy for Dermid Ajala with Zarine watching him. Having Zarine around watching him all the time makes him very uneasy. Perrin almost calls her Faile but catches himself, which amuses her greatly. She suggests that he would look better with a beard. They head to the inn and meet up with Moiraine and Lan. Moiraine says that Rand is in Tear and Lan cites a variety of strange happenings that can only be caused by the presence of a strong ta'veren. Moiraine says Zarine, Perrin, and Loial should go to Tar Valon, while she and Lan enter the Stone of Tear. Perrin is tired of running again and thinks that it was better when they were fighting back. Zarine says she is fine with running from the Forsaken and goes to fetch Loial.
Perrin goes upstairs and sees Zarine on the floor next to a small hedgehog on the floor. When he sees her, he calls her Faile. Moiraine says she felt it trigger; she senses flows of Spirit in the area. When questioned, the innkeeper admits to allowing two women to bring a "surprise present" for Moiraine to their private dining room, despite previously promising that nobody would be allowed to enter. Moiraine says Faile is alive, but not in her body any longer. Zarine is trapped in a dream, maybe Tel'aran'rhiod. Moiraine says she must go to the Stone, and Perrin thinks the wolf dream is similar to where Zarine is trapped. Moiraine wants him to leave and go to Tar Valon, but he refuses and decides he must help Faile.
Perrin explains to Loial about the trap. Perrin asks Loial to guard his back while he tries to help Faile. Loial is enraged that a free spirit like Faile would be trapped so; Loial promises that no one, not even the Dark One, will pass him while he lives. Perrin jumps into the room and finds himself in the Wolf Dream, with a wide expanse of wilderness around him. Hopper meets Perrin and says he should leave, that he is here too strongly and will die. Perrin replies that he doesn't care, Faile is there and he must free her. Perrin feels himself turn into a wolf, even bigger than Hopper. Hopper declares that they will hunt and they set out across the plain.
