Summary[]

Point of view: Perrin Aybara

Lan wakes Perrin and says that Rand is gone. Perrin is still hungry, an effect of being Healed. He craves raw meat as wolves do. Masema thinks they did something to anger the Dragon, and he abandoned them but Perrin reassures him that this was Rand's plan. Perrin goes to Moiraine's hut and Min and Loial are also there. Perrin thinks Masema is going crazy, but Moiraine has no time to spare for that. Min gives Perrin the note Rand wrote before leaving in the night. Rand's note says that Ba'alzamon is hunting for him again and this time either Ba'alzamon or Rand must die. Rand has left alone because he does not want anyone else dying for him.

Perrin blames Moiraine for this because she pushed Rand to declare himself the Dragon; does she really believe him the true Dragon Reborn or is she just using him for her own ends? She does not answer the question directly. Moiraine worries about dangers Rand is not aware of. The Seals on the Dark One’s prison are weakening and many of the Forsaken may be loose already. Perrin mutters about Rand's dreams and Moiraine makes him tell her about his dreams, the one about Callandor in particular. Apparently Rand is unconsciously broadcasting his dreams so that others have the same dreams. Someone could be manipulating Rand's dreams of Callandor to lure him to take it. The Dragon is prophesied to be the only person who can take Callandor from where it sits in the Heart of the Stone. They know Rand is going to Tear now and must follow him. Moiraine sends the Shienarans to Jehannah, capital of Ghealdan, since most are too wounded to participate in the chase. Moiraine insists that Min go to Tar Valon to report to the Amyrlin what has happened. Min protests mightily but she is the only one who can deliver the message without others realizing it is from Moiraine. Just Moiraine, Lan, Loial and Perrin will pursue Rand.

Before they leave, Min takes Perrin aside and tells him of viewings she had of him since his decision to go was made.

  • an Aielman in a cage
  • a Tuatha'an with a sword
  • a falcon and a hawk, perching on his shoulders, both female

She also warns him to run if he encounters the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, but this just confuses him now and later. Perrin starts to think Min is interested in him but then realizes that Min is in love with Rand.
