Rand al'Thor prepares to confront Graendal and sends for Lord Ramshalan and Nynaeve to accompany him. He asks Ramshalan how he would deal with an enemy who is smarter than himself. After Ramshalan suggests allying with such an enemy, Rand weaves a Gateway to Natrin's Barrow and sends Ramshalan through to offer Graendal an alliance and return with her answer as quick as possible. He sends the Maidens present through the Gateway ahead of him. They vanish into the nearby trees and Nerilea returns to signal that all is clear.

Rand, Min, and Nynaeve pass through the Gateway and wait in view of Natrin's Barrow until Ramshalan returns under strong Compulsion accompanied by a group of Maidens. Rand then channels balefire to destroy the entire palace and population of Natrin's Barrow. Min feels a wave come from the direction of the Barrow, as if the world itself almost collapsed and Nynaeve is furious and disgusted with the murder of so many innocents. He "confirms" Graendal's death by having Nynaeve check that the Compulsion is no longer on Ramshalan's mind. Leaving Ramshalan behind with directions to a village two days south, the rest return to Bandar Eban through the Gateway.

Back in Bandar Eban, Nynaeve initially defends Rand's behavior, saying if he had been that cold in the beginning, how many more people would still be alive. Min points out that he's stopped caring about anything other than defeating the Dark One and Nynaeve agrees. Min and Nynaeve decide to inform Cadsuane what just happened and ask what Cadsuane plans for Rand in the future. When they reach Cadsuane, she is with Wise Ones and they all claim they felt the world warping but assumed it was the Dark One's work. Nynaeve wishes to be a part of their plans for Rand and once she agrees to be obedient, Cadsuane, while not agreeing to share their full plans yet, orders Nynaeve to find Perrin.
