"I will do my best, Hurin. By my House and honor. A shepherd's House and a shepherd's honor, but I'll make them do as well as a lord's."

Summary[]

Point of view: Rand al'Thor

Rand wakes up and the hollow they were in is now much different. He sees Loial and Hurin next to him with their horses, but everyone else and their horses are gone. The half-buried stone is now an upright column in the ground. There are now steps leading up to the stone, in seven colors, one for each Aes Sedai Ajah. Loial examines the stone and says he remembers reading about Stones that the Aes Sedai in the Age of Legends used to travel to other worlds. This prompts Rand to think about the Power and his skin prickles.[1] He thinks back to last night when he entered the Void while thinking about how to run away, and wonders if he brought them here with the Power subconsciously.

Hurin is worried that he won't be able to see his wife and children again, but hopes Rand will be able to get them back to their proper place. He has confidence in Rand, who he thinks is a lord, to fix what has gone wrong. Rand feels the weight of duty and decides to try to channel to bring them back. He touches the Stone and enters the Void; then he pictures the hollow as it had been, with the Stone half buried and the rest of the party present. Nothing happens and the Void shatters.[2] Rand feels the taint on saidin; his stomach lurches from the feel of filth. Hurin is now more confident in Rand than before because he can see that Rand is doing something. He tells Rand that he still smells the Darkfriends although it is fainter. Rand decides to follow the trail to at least recover the Horn and dagger if nothing else.

Loial looks at Rand questioningly. He saw that Rand touched the Stone trying to use it, and says that the Stones can only be used by the One Power. What did Rand hope to accomplish? Rand is caught by surprise but says that if the Darkfriends are here too then there must be another way to use the Stones. Rand will find out how.
