Setting: Fal Dara, Shienar

Summary[]

Point of view: Rand al'Thor

Rand goes to his room so he can pack to leave Fal Dara. He finds Elansu , shatayan of the keep, with some of the servants taking his old clothes and those of Mat and Perrin and replacing it with new, much fancier clothing. Elansu tells Rand that Moraine sedai asked her to remove all the old clothes, every stitch, even the small clothes. This makes Rand blush as he is still getting accustomed to bold shienarian ways. Rand asks Elansu and other servants to wait outside and promises to give them the clothes he is wearing, including his boots. Rand notices, to his horror, that his new cloak has been embroidered with the symbol of the Dragon from the Dragon Banner. He hopes nobody who saw it knows what it means. After changing, he grabs some spare clothes, taking care to bury the cloak in the middle of the bundle. He plans to remove the embroidery later. He also takes Thom Merrilin's harp, flute, and cloak and leaves the keep for the stables.

He cuts through the courtyard to get to the stables as quickly as possible. At the courtyard the Amyrlin's party is just arriving. Rand sees warders with their color shifting cloak standing in the courtyard, a dozen paces in front of the warders stood fourteen Aes Sedai. There is a curtained palanquin in the center of the courtyard, carrying the Amrylin seat. An elaborate ceremony is in progress where the Amyrlin is greeted by Lord Agelmar Jagad. Despite his hurry, Rand slows down and watches the ceremony.

At the stables Rand is told by Tema that no one may leave, not on horse or on foot. Tema tells Rand that the order came only a few moments ago. All the gates are closed and no one can enter or leave without permission. Rand asks Tema if the order has come from Lord Agelmar. Tema replies positively as who else can give such an order in Fal Dara, but Rand has his doubts. Rand runs off when Tema mentions that the ceremony in the courtyard is finished and the Amyrlin will be sending for Rand soon.
