Summary[]
- Point of view: Rand al'Thor
The group enters the inn where Rand sees a handful of soldiers playing dice and their captain at another table. The innkeeper, Maglin Madwen, asks if Rand is hunting for the Horn of Valere. Rand he says no, avoiding looking at Loial who is carrying the chest. They eat their dinner, and Madwen asks if Hurin will play the flute. Rand says it is his flute and obliges with some songs to stay in practice, expecting to need to work as a gleeman in the future.
Aldrin Caldevwin, the captain, comes over to see if he can find any holes in Rand's story. Having visited the Royal Palace in Caemlyn, Rand is able to pass as an Andoran noble. When Caldevwin begins to question Selene, a maid drops a lamp and Selene leaves to go to bed, claiming sickness. Hurin is seen by everyone in the inn as a servant, and no one talks to him. Rand asks about the statue he saw with a huge hand and a crystal sphere. Caldevwin tells him it is from the Age of Legends and says that he has a crew working on uncovering the statue so it can be taken to the capital. His guards watching the workmen need rotating on a regular basis and there will be another group heading back to the capital tomorrow. He asks for them to ride with Rand and assumes Rand will agree. When they get to their rooms, Rand asks what that was all about, the officer acting suspicious and all. Hurin explains that it is the Great Game, Daes Dae'mar. Cairhienin are plotting all the time and assume everyone else is plotting too.
In the morning, the innkeeper has a note for Rand written by Selene, sealed with a crescent moon and stars. It says that she left because there are too many people and she doesn't like Caldevwin; she will be waiting in Cairhien and will never be too far away from Rand. Caldevwin is furious with his men that Selene left during the night without any of them noticing. Rand accepts the escort of fifty soldiers and they proceed to the city of Cairhien.
