"My mother always told me the best way to learn to deal with a man was to learn to ride a mule. She said they have about equal brains most of the time. Sometimes the mule is smarter."

Setting: Fal Dara, Shienar

Summary[]

Point of view: Rand al'Thor

Rand is still trying to get out of the city because he fears what the Amyrlin will do to him. He runs into Masema and Ragan guarding a sally gate. Ragan would likely have let him out despite their orders otherwise, but Masema is there and will not deviate from duty. Other gates he checks are also locked and guarded. Even the dog gate is guarded.

He starts wandering around with no particular purpose, just hoping to go to places where people won't be looking for him. He wonders if Moiraine sent for the Amyrlin because of him, and that's why she's in the city. Eventually he ends up in a storeroom and runs into Loial. Thinking that the city was built by Ogier, Rand asks him if he knows the city's layout and possible exits. Loial says that the Ogier built Mafal Dadaranell, but that city is gone and Fal Dara which now stands in its place was built by men. Mat and Perrin are also there, and Mat is winning at dice. Mat and Perrin do not know Rand can channel, so they don't understand his desire to leave the keep. Rand, wanting to keep Mat and Perrin out of it, gets into a fight with them so they won't want to come with him. Then he is rude to Loial and even makes Loial mad, so now he can leave the city alone.

Leaving, Rand runs into Egwene who says that she spoke to Mat and the others. Rand tells Egwene that he needs to leave before the Aes Sedai get him, but Egwene holds onto him when he tries to go. Egwene says that he can just hide where nobody expects and suggests the dungeons. She goes to see Padan Fain there sometimes anyway so it would be fine for her to take him there now. Rand tells Egwene that she should have asked Moiraine whether it is wise to visit Padan Fain. Egwene retorts that she doesn't need to ask Moiraine for permission and says that Fain is someone she can talk about home with. Since she has been doing it for a while anyway, Rand eventually agrees to go.

The guards used to be pleasant to Egwene but now Changu is very surly and Nidao is silent. They pass the other prisoners who snarl at them, and Egwene notes that the prisoners have gotten worse over time too. Fain tells Rand that he will be on the Dark One's side when Fain is done with him. Egwene says that Fain is not normally like this and realizes it was a bad idea to bring Rand down here. Egwene then suggests hiding Rand in the women's quarters. Rand thinks this is crazy because the Aes Sedai must be there, but Egwene points out that it would be the last place anyone would look. Rand reluctantly agrees.
