Summary[]
- Point of view: Elayne Trakand
Elayne, Nynaeve and Aviendha are relieved when Egwene awakens from Tel'aran'rhiod, as they had been unable to wake her when the time came. Nynaeve was about to empty a pitcher of water on her. Egwene tells them how the Wise One Amys told her to come to Cold Rocks Hold in the Aiel Waste to learn. Although agitated, Aviendha explains that Amys was once Far Dareis Mai until she gave up the spear to go to Rhuidean, and that she is Rhuarc's wife as well as sister-wife to Lian (who is Aviendha's sister-mother). This confuses the girls and shocks them when they finally understand that Rhuarc has two wives. Egwene dismisses Aviendha's suggestion of her and Elayne becoming sister-wives to Rand, but Elayne is reminded of Min's viewing about her sharing her husband with two other women.[1][2] Egwene further explains that Amys sensed an evil in Tanchico, which could possibly be the Black Ajah.
Egwene has decided that she needs to go to the Waste to seek Amys, with Aviendha as her guide, and offers to leave the twisted stone ring with the other two girls so they can meet in Tel'aran'rhiod in the Stone of Tear to teach them what she learns. Elayne and then Nynaeve agree she must go, and that they will travel to Tanchico. Aviendha has no chance to voice her opinion before Moiraine enters and announces that Joiya and Amico are dead, apparently killed by something of the Shadow during the Trolloc attack on the Stone.[3] The prison guards stayed at their posts during the attack and saw nothing, but afterwards the women were found with their throats cut after their tongues had been nailed to their cell doors.
Nynaeve informs Moiraine that she and Elayne will go to Tanchico by ship while Egwene and Aviendha go to Cold Rocks hold in the Waste. Aviendha declines, saying a different Maiden can escort Egwene while making excuses as to why she should instead go with Elayne and Nynaeve. But Moiraine takes out a letter she had just received from Wise Ones Amys, Bair, Melaine and Seana. The letter is addressed to her in the Stone and was written a month ago, before the party had even reached Tear. Aviendha says the named Wise Ones are all Dreamwalkers and Moiraine muses that may be why they knew to send this letter. The Wise Ones say that Aviendha must come to Chaendaer, above Rhuidean, without delay. Aviendha angrily protests that she is Far Dareis Mai and will go to Tanchico if she wishes, but Moiraine tells her that, following the letter's instructions, she had showed the letter to Rhuarc.[4] After Aviendha stalks out of the room angrily, Moiraine refuses to reveal why the Wise Ones wanted Aviendha as it is not their business.[5]
Moiraine tells the girls that there is an Atha'an Miere ship at the docks in the Maule in Tear which would be ideal for a fast voyage to Tanchico. Elayne ponders what Rand will do when she tells him she is leaving for Tanchico.
