Summary[]
- Point of view: Egwene al'Vere
Egwene expresses her impatience with whatever is delaying Moiraine from returning. She was supposed to be here but left with Elayne immediately after receiving a message delivered by Careen. Egwene asks Aviendha about it but Aviendha did not hear the message. She feels uncomfortable about deceiving Aviendha with their claim that they were full Aes Sedai. They had let the Tairens believe that they were all Aes Sedai to have strength in numbers and Egwene cannot reveal the truth to Aviendha in order to keep the secret safe. Moiraine ordered Aviendha to accompany them, perhaps to keep them safe.[1]
Nynaeve's mutterings about Tanchico bring Egwene back to the task at hand, the questioning of two Black Ajah prisoners; Joiya Byir,[2] formerly of the Gray Ajah, and Amico Nagoyin, who was stilled.[3] Amico continues to tell them that they should go to Tanchico after overhearing Liandrin speak to Temaile of something able to control the Dragon Reborn, with some risk to the controller as well.[4] Nynaeve demands to know the names of more Black Ajah members, but Amico only knew a few of the Darkfriend Sisters.
Nynaeve's impatience gets the better of her as she demands that they speak to the other prisoner, but Egwene is annoyed at getting cut off. The two women stare at each other for a while until Amico obediently turns to face the wall and waits to be bound. Before questioning the other prisoner, Aviendha comments that Amico no longer shows the agelessness that most Aes Sedai show in their faces.[5] Aviendha asks whether this is a product of being stilled and Egwene agrees that it could be.
Egwene releases Joiya who tries to convince them that she has repented and returned to the Light. Egwene does not believe her, and postulates that the oaths a Black Sister swears must somehow override the Oath Rod and the Three Oaths. She orders the prisoner to give her tale once more, but worded differently in an attempt to catch her in a lie. Joiya recalls a plot to rescue Mazrim Taim, the false Dragon, and wreak havoc upon the land while posing as Rand al'Thor.[6] The nations would band together to destroy the Dragon and the Dark One will break free with no chosen one to fight him at Tarmon Gai'don.
While deciding which one to believe, the door bangs open to reveal Moiraine, her prized Aes Sedai serenity nowhere to be found. Elayne follows her in, frowning thoughtfully.
Unanswered Questions[]
- How was Amico stilled? Was it by Egwene's shield in Tel'aran'rhiod? Was it by Nynaeve when she punched her? A combination of both?
