Weiramon Saniago is a Tairen High Lord and a Darkfriend.[1]
Appearance[]
He is thin, with gray streaked hair and an oiled pointy beard. He is not short and there is something of a strutting rooster about him. He is balding.
Activities[]
To Cairhien[]
Despite being in service to Rand, Weiramon's noble prejudices and exaggerated opinion of his own abilities make him, if not untrustworthy, at least unsuitable to take charge of matters of great importance. For example, his views on military tactics begin and end with the charge, with no room for deviation. He was sent to Cairhien as reinforcements when the city was attacked by the Shaido, gathering forces as he went.
Due to Weiramon's high rank but poor military tactics, he was sent from the Second Battle of Cairhien to the Plains of Maredo. He was placed in charge of the massive force Rand gathered there for the attack on Illian. He almost ruined the attack on Illian by attacking with the cavalry and leaving the slower infantry behind, though the Aiel forces were able to keep up.
The Seanchan campaign[]
He went with Rand when Rand tried to deal with the Illian rebels loyal to Sammael's Lord Brend persona. He was placed under Rand's direct command when Rand's forces fought the invading Seanchan army in the mountains north of Illian. He broke position to charge a group of Seanchan, allowing another group of Seanchan through to hit Rand's position from behind. He convinced Rand to keep advancing toward Ebou Dar. He led Charl Gedwyn, Kiril Drapaneos, Bertome Saighan, and Doressin Chuliandred into the final assault against the Seanchan. Rand brought him back to Cairhien and gave him servants that were loyal to Rand and Dobraine Taborwin.
Under Darlin[]
He was later seen conversing with Bertome in Cairhien's corridors.
Again disobeying Rand's orders he traveled to Tear and was in the Stone of Tear when Rand arrived to talk to Darlin Sisnera. He wished to sortie out against the besieging rebels. The idea was squashed by Darlin. Rand sent Weiramon with the rest of the Tairen forces into Arad Doman.
He greeted Rand with King Darlin when Rand withdrew his forces from Arad Doman back into Tear.
After Rand's personal redemption, he seemed to gain the ability to tell a Darkfriend by looking into their eyes. He ordered all the High Lords and Ladies into a line and confirmed Weiramon and Anaiyella Narencelona were Darkfriends and sent them away as a warning to any others.
Fate[]
His fate is unknown, but Moridin later stated to Rand that Weiramon was shocked at the trick Rand had done to him to work out he was a Darkfriend.
Parallels[]
His first name probably derives from the English words weir—a fish trap—and a man: as a Darkfriend, he traps other people in the service of the Dark One. His surname likely connects to the fisherman Santiago, the main character in Ernest Hemingway↗'s The Old Man and the Sea↗, who might have influenced Saniago's appearance. At the same time, Jordan's spelling of the name brings it closer to Shakespeare's Iago↗, which is a fitting connection to his character.[2]
