Summary[]
Point of view: Faile Bashere
Faile and the others are forced to march naked through the snow by the group of roughly 150 Shaido. A tall Aiel named Rolan leads Faile. To stay focused and alert, she tries noting anything that could aid in their escape. After hours of marching, feet bloodied, Rolan hauls her on his shoulders and carries her onwards. Faile, even colder without the constant running, worries about frostbite.
Bain and Chiad accept their fate - a year and a day as gai'shain and are able to keep up with the Shaido. Lacile Aldorwin and Arrela Shiego of Cha Faile, try to emulate the Aiel Maidens with some success. Maighdin and Alliandre struggle frequently, leading to their beatings. Eventually, they are also carried by Shaido.
The cold and running motion gradually lulls Faile to sleep. She dreams of Perrin, running across an icy landscape, and then a bonfire. She wakes and a gai'shain gives her almost scalding, honeyed tea to drink. She and the other women are camped out being warmed by a fire with blankets, coats, and tea. Faile realizes the gai'shain were not with them on the march, so they must have joined an even larger Shaido camp. She sees thousands of Shaido around and begins despairing of escape.
