Setting: Caemlyn, Royal Palace of Andor |
Summary[]
Point of view: Elayne Trakand
Elayne rides through Camelyn to win the hearts and minds of the people. She also wants to see first-hand the situation of the many refugees, merchants, craftsmen, mercenaries, guards, and families displaced by war. Sareitha Tomares Sedai, her Warder Ned Yarman, and 8 Queen's Guard escort her through the city. The women of the Queen's Guard were hand-picked by Birgitte, but Sareitha still feels the streets are not safe. She mentions the suspicious group of 10 Aes Sedai staying at the The Silver Swan inn, but Elayne already has a watch on them.
Elayne feels Birgitte's anger and urgency through the Warder bond and redirects straight towards the Royal Palace of Andor. Birgitte meets Elayne with the news that Dyelin's escort were ambushed and killed. They were discreetly escorting Naean Arawn and Elenia Sarand (rivals to the Andoran throne) from the town of Aringill to Camelyn. Clearly, there is a spy in the palace, so Birgitte insists in increasing Elayne's bodyguard. Elayne bristles at the growing restrictions and responsibilities put upon her. Similarly, Birgitte resents Elayne's continued stubbornness and the responsibilities of being Captain General of the Queen's Guard. Birgitte is also angry at Elayne and Aviendha sneaking out only to be attacked by street toughs. Sareitha asks who Birgitte suspects took Naean Arawn and Elenia Sarand. But, Elayne humbles Sareitha with her political acumen regarding the plots of House Arawn and House Sarand.
The group rides back to the Palace in silence. Elayne ruminates over the Aes Sedai at The Silver Swan, spies in the Palace, captors of Naean and Elenia, guard recruitment, and selling off Palace goods to get enough money. As she makes her way through the Palace, she wonders about all the unfamiliar new faces she meets. Sareitha and Ned excuse themselves to the library. Elayne and Birgitte argue in the halls about the relationship of Warder to Aes Sedai until Birgitte storms off.
She asks a boy servant to have Reene Harfor meet her in her apartments.
