Point of view: Elayne Trakand
Elayne receives reports from Norry. Deposits of alum have been found on one of her estates which will make it easier to get loans from the bankers to fund the guard force Birgitte is building. He mentions an attack on Rand in the Sun Palace and no one really knows where he is now.
She is brought her afternoon meal. Afterward Dyelin reports merchants have spotted a large borderland army when she realizes someone slipped forkroot in her tea. She struggles trying to tell Dyelin , who then attempts to raise the alarm to the guards. Three assassins come in. Dyelin is able to occupy one and stall another until Doilin Mellar saves the day. Elayne succumbs to the forkroot while mentally calling for Birgitte.
